Check out Biosphere 2 in Oracle, Arizona just North of Tuscon! They have five biomes including a rainforest, marsh, and ocean! They were developed by Columbia University and are now run by University of Arizona where Noam Chomsky is now head of Environmental and Social Justice. Currently, they are working on science with a marine biologist from Hawaii with heat resistant super corals. Corals are the trees of our seas and when the water temperature gets too high and or the light is unable to get to the coral due to pollutants like microscopic plastics and other debris, the microorganisms (Zoanthalae) get displaced from the coral. They are in a symbiotic relationship -- they need each other -- for the coral to have life by creating photosynthesis. You can follow the science and lessons at the Biosphere 2 online. The Biomimicry Center was started at University of Arizona and biomimicry is the root of many innovations from medicine, to material fabrication at MIT spearheaded by Neri Oxman. If you want to get your students excited about technology, the future of food, the interconnectedness of systems thinking -- check out the Biosphere 2 in person or online -- or simply walk outside and into nature and start observing our world.
